I have drones in one of my hives Is this Normal in winter? I thought they only live a short while and are ejected from the hive in autumn

Yes, this can be found in many hives, though not many drones, but they can be found and the more natural the hive, the more the drones are carried over, just like virgin queens to await spring mating from late fall raising.
