I'm a novice beekeeper, and I recently received some old hives from a former beekeeper. I've noticed that inside the wood is scarred across the entire inside surfaces, as if by burrowing insects or worms. The marks are about 1/8" wide and less than 1/2" long. Most are like small divots, or shallow gouges made by a wood-carving tool; a few are clearly burrowed holes, but they do not go very deep. The wood is dry, not rotted, and apparently free of anything living.
Has anyone seen such a thing and can advise me? Are these hives safe to use again?
